Default cd drive not responding due to software

i have a red circle with a slash over my cd drive icon in the device manager. there are no error messages and the computer says device is working properly. i have tried reinstalling the driver but it is not correcting the problem. cd player will not play. it will not respond to autoplay. does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks.

What driver have you installed ? optical drives are natively supported in Windows by the ATAPI system, unless it's a SATA device.
The overlay you mention is put there by the system to indicate a hardware failure normally.
