Default SD card readers

I upgraded my PC and laptop to Vista. Only recently did I notice that the built in card readers (SD, MS Pro, etc.) do not respond. When the cards are inserted, the computers actually freeze up. I also tried an external card read with the same results. If my camera is connected via USB, then i am able to download files from the SD card. I couldn't find a location that may have drivers for Vista. Everything I found was for XP.
