Default Vista Repair Option

While trying to install SP2 on a friend's Vista machine, the machine crashed, and now all that appears when trying to start the system is an error '0xc0190036' and a file name. I cannot even get the system to boot into safe mode. In some posts to other forums, I have concluded that this is because the file name is corrupt and needs to be fixed. I have tried to restore to the last restore point, but that fails as well.

My question is this....any solutions that I have found involve using the Vista install CD to repair the HD. Well, he doesnt have a Vista install CD, and I dont know what version of Vista he has. If I buy a copy of Vista Ultimate, and he has, say, Home edition, will I be able to use my Ultimate CD/DVD to do a repair on his HD?

Is there another way to do this?

Any and all help is much appreciated
