Question Windows 7 in 2009!

Just thought I'd drop a link to a /. article on the rapidly approaching new version of windows. I just have to question this decision as it seems to me that it would be cutting Vista at the knees just when it would really be hitting both its user base and stability "stride".

Are they try to clean their hands of Vista? This is a very unusual decision to me really.
Why not spend the time to make Vista as loved as XP is? Releasing a new version of windows when people still aren't happy with the previous version isn't going to boost consumer confidence.

Just rumours, from what are known gossip sources. In any case, If it is proposed at the end of 2009, add on a considerable number of months, for the usual miscalculation of "time completed" which naturally exists in the world in all spheres. You are then looking at a minimum time since the Vista release of 4 years, which is actually approaching normality.

Microsoft is NOT planning to release Windows 7 in 2009.

Microsoft's official response, by an email dated 26th January, 2008, to WinVistaClub states that Windows 7 is still in the planning stage and will take approximately 3 years to develop.

While the answers to the other 2 questions may have been on predictable lines, what is important to note that Microsoft TODAY maintains that Windows 7 is STILL in the planning stages and it will take approximately 3 (more) years to develop.

Windows has always drawn speculation; probably because it is so intrinsic to everything that we do with computers. Windows 7 was originally time-lined 2011, later reports put it at 2010; and now 2009 ! All this smoke of Windows 7, being released next year, may have led to confusion in the minds of the Windows Vista user. Did he make a mistake in upgrading? Or should he have waited? Microsoft feels that there is STILL a lot of innovation and value that needs to flow to the customers, from Vista.

In a comment to the CMP Channel, Microsoft had this to say about Windows 7:
  • "We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and expect the development to take approximately 3 years since the release of Windows Vista. The specific release date will be determined once the company meets its quality bar for release," said the spokesperson.
Now, even though Windows Vista wasn't available for consumers until early 2007, it did RTM in November 2006 and was available for businesses in the same month. So it does appear that Windows 7's schedule has been moved up slightly to late 2009 if it meets the "quality bar for release" with possibly a consumer launch in early 2010 similar to Vista's early 2007 launch.

The schedule, that is Release candidates and RTM's, have been moved up. Allowing for the usual delays, this should makethe release have a fairly normal interval with compared to earlier Microsoft OS's.

VISTA would have been loved as much as XP had the following been done up front:
1. Too many versions were offered. Why not just HOME & PRO, (Like XP)
2. Supply video card driver software to all of the main vendors. Video card problems were the main issues when VISTA first came out. (Also assist other hardware vendors with driver support. Don't force people to have to buy new hardware, such as printers / scanners.)
3. There was no true honesty for checking if you computer had the requirements for an upgrade to VISTA. The compatibility list was geared to HOME BASIC. Who the hell wants that? HOME BASIC is not the true VISTA experience.
4. Lower the cost.

Don't think WINDOWS 7 will be unique. It will also use the VISTA kernel. The was I read into it, it will be more like VISTA SP2.

By that time, however, I think VISTA will be far more accepted. It is a better operating system than XP. It's just going through more growing pains than most.

A brief history of windows:
WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS - A newborn child
WINDOWS 3.1 - A 3 year old
WINDOWS 95 - A 6 year old know it all, stamping its feet on the ground
WINDOWS 98 - Just graduated elementary school
WINDOWS ME - Tried pot for the first time
WINDOWS 2000 - Said no to the pot
WINDOWS XP - Made it to high school, and is willing to learn
WINDOWS VISTA - XP on Meth-Amphetamine
WINDOWS 7 - (Hopefully a high school grad)

Apparently Jan 2010 is the latest word on it.
