Default Dnscache service stops dns resolving!?!?!

This is driving me mad trying to find the answer but ive narrowed it down a bit.

In the last month ive had 2 clients with vista machines that wont use DNS, even if i manually assign the addresses.
There are no proxy's involved,
Neither DHCP nor Manual configurations work,
Neither wireless nor cabled connections work,
Tried on 3 different networks,
Reinstalled network device drivers,
Brand new laptop from HP, a dv2000.

I noticed that if i boot into safe mode then the problem goes away so thought it must be a service or something in standard mode.
Tried the stopping the dnscache service and now i can get internet fine but windows updates dont work! (Even if they did, its not really a proper fix).

Tried reinstalling drivers and already have the latest ones installed. Also tried flushing the DNS.

Cant find anything on the internet/microsoft KB relating to this which i find amazing cos ive seen it twice.
On the last machine i downgraded to XP and all was fine. Vista was reinstalled but the same problem occured. Is this somehow a hardware thing?
Any ideas anyone???

No ideas? 2 other forums have not been able to figure this out either.

Default Upgrade Router Firmware

I recently solved a bunch of vista internet/networking errors by updating the fimware on my router. Make sure your router (and laptop hardware drivers) are vista capable is the only other thing I would say to look into.

Thanks for the reply, but thats definitely not it. I use vista on my machine and ive had the laptop on works network where we fix pc's all day. I cant believe this is such an unknown problem as ive seen it twice now and i had to give up and downgrade to xp before. I didnt want to but i will reinstall vista on the laptop to see if it makes a difference.

OK, I fixed it. An unactivated installation of Norton. As soon as that came off everything was fine. God, i hate that program!

Now NOD32 is on and everything is normal. yay!

Why would norton cause the problem? is that it or vistas fault. i dunno.
