Default Disabling Data Execution Protection causes start-up crash...

Hey everyone, my problem is that I had disabled DEP using cmd and now every time I try and start my computer up it crashes immediately when vista loads. I tried loading in safe mode and same problem occurs and I have no idea what to do now, any suggestions?

Another classic example of "don`t play with something unless you know what you are doing".

Insert your install/rescue disk, then boot up into the advanced boot menu and choose system restore (restore to an earlier date than the DEP change. Let Vista do its magic then reboot without disk.

luckypunq your totally right about not messing with things I don't fully understand. What I did though should not cause the computer to absolutely crash on startup. I also tried restoring the settings to their previous state from a day before I changed the setting yet somehow it is still having the same problem. i did a hardware diagnostic and a self repair yet still the problem persists. At this point I may just have to factory reset the comp b/c there seems like there is nothing else to do.

Have you tried re-enabling DEP from command mode ?
Open a command window from run > type CMD return (makes sure it comes with admin status)

then it goes like this.

To Enable DEP -
A) In the elevated command prompt, type bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx OptIn and press Enter.
NOTE: If for some reason this command does not enable DEP after restarting the computer, then use the bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn command instead.

B) You should get a success message back

C) Close the elevated command prompt.

D) Restart the computer to apply.

There is always the other school of thought that fiddling with things that you later have to learn how to fix, can expand you computer literacy much faster than reading a whole stack of books.
