Default Repair dead Compaq 6820s

OK - here's the situation.

I was given a HP Compaq 6820s by a good friend with a bad hard drive. He had
not made recovery discs, and HP can't supply them. I can replace the hard
drive no problem, but don't want to fork over the $$$ for a new Vista OS (the original is Vista Business). I
have XP pro, but there seems to be too many issues with downgrading. He has bought a new laptop with Vista Home Edition. Can I make recovery discs from his new computer and use those to install a new OS on the old one once I swap the HD?
Sorry if this is a basic question but I am an old XP guy and this is my first tangle with Vista.............

No you can't, the hardware is specifically different and the restore disks from the laptop will only work on the laptop, the activation of the system software relies on BIOS intervention, which you don't have. Further the licencing becomes a problem and you would need to buy a new one from MS. The machine you have would have come with an OEM version which dies when the machine does, your only realistic option is to buy another OEM vista version and start from scratch.
