Exclamation How Do I Reset Vista's Index Location?

my vista's index is totally stuffed. i unwittingly changed my index location onto my ramdrive (emulated hdd using ram) for faster seek time, but when i rebooted, my index files were gone and windows did not know where they went. Now, i cant use my index cos it cant even be activated (ive tried using "Services" - no luck). Does anyone know how to manually change the index location or reset the index service altogether, maybe using "Start parameters"?

btw. windows says: "Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified"

p.s. i have since removed the ramdrive drivers and the ramdrive no longer exists (good riddance)

p.p.s. i cant do a system restore, for my restore points were overwritten and i really don't wanna reinstall vista....

thnx in advance

The best idea for this is is to open START and click help and support. Type index in the search box. There is a load of help in there.

Type Index in Vistas search bar and Hit enter.
You will get the Indexing Options box.
Select Advanced Options, and there in Index Location, click on Select New.
The default is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft

There you have it. having done this, you should re-index/rebuild all.

thanx 4 the effort Danielle, but that doesnt work... all the buttons in the Indexing Options window were greyed out, so I couldn't use your method. But to remedy my situation, I re-installed Vista and made a backup of my C:\ drive to have a way out the next time this happens.
