Unhappy Vista won't open pics from flash drive

Please help! I transfered all my pictures, documents, music and videos from my laptop that is running Windows XP to my new laptop that runs Vista via a flash drive. Some pics will open while others say "Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video. The file format is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Gallery" I tried opening them with Paint and it says "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or it's file is not currently supported" The folder that had all my resumes and documents is now empty. Now I transfered not copied these important docs to the flash drive so I don't have backup on the XP laptop. I tried to open the pics on my XP laptop and it says "Removable drive must be formatted in order to use it" or something like that. I hope someone can help me, it was all my pictures that i've had over the years and now I fear they are gone :*( Thanks a bunch!

What format are these pictures in? Have you tried opening them in Internet Explorer?

In future you'll leave copies on the hard drive won't you ;-)

They are .jpeg format and some of the pics will open but others won't. I see the blue couldy sky thumbnail but get that error when I open it. Is this a vista/xp clash? Or did something mess up along the way?

It sound very much like there has been corruption when some of the files have been copied, rather than do anything to the files where they are now I think your best chance is to use a recovery program on the laptop, providing you hav'n't defragmented the drive the pics were on there is a good chance you can recover them from where they originally.
A good freeware program for this can be downloaded here this page has the links to download from
http://www.majorgeeks.com/FreeUndelete_d4407.html
Install the program then scan the drive or partition the pics were on, it may take some time but don't worry, when it's done it will show you the files that were deleted (when you transfer a file it still copies it and then deletes the source, but they're not actually deleted just 'flagged' as being available space to be written to again so unless you defragged or install a lot of other files many if not all will be recoverable) it also allows you to select a folder to write any recovered files to.
If you need further helo once you have the program installed post back and I'll talk you through it.

Needles to say if you do recover them and want to put them on the other machine, I think this time you'll copy them first, then when verified they're all ok, delete the originals from the lappy again!

Yes I have tried that but as soon as I tried to open the pics it says something like "the removeable disk drive must be formatted, do you want to format now?" so I formatted assuming it was screwed anyway.

I don't hold high hopes for those pictures being retrievable. Unless someone else has an answer. Sorry.
