Default Unwanted prompts appearing

Problem with unwanted prompts popping up.

When typing an email message, when I type certain characters unwanted pop-ups appear. When I type an "S" a "save" prompt might come up. An "n" will open a new compose window. An "f" will bring up a "find" prompt. This will happen often but not always. I am not hitting a combination of keys as in a shortcut, but just characters in the words of the message I am writing.

Also, when this happens my cursor will lock up and not allow me to type another character or spacebar ahead.

Does anyone know what's happening?

Sounds like you have sticky keys enabled (to enable/disable sticky keys press the shift key 5 times in a row)

or
You may have you recently spilt liquid on your keyboard recently? Sometimes the contacts on the keyboard mat (under the keys) fail when they have been contaminated. Cure = new keyboard.

Thanks for the help.

What are sticky keys (other than the obvious)?

As far as I know no liquids have been spilled on my keyboard.

Also, don't key shortcuts require at least two keys to be pressed at once?

Using Vista (which I don't like as well as XP).

Default Humor, not sarcasm

No sarcasm intended, that was humor.

Actually I did check out the Sticky Keys and believe I understand the concept.

I also did as you advised (pressed the shift key 5 times), and things appear to be better, but not completely. I still get unbidden promps and shortcuts, but not as frequently.

In fact, I hate all shortcut keys. I'd rather do most of the thinking when I'm typing. Is there some way to absolutely shut off all "time-saving" and/or "helpful keys", period? I'd love it if I was just allowed to type and save when I decide (and I'n not even a Libertarian), etc. without being interrupted by "helpful" keys.

It's very infuriating, when I'm on a roll, to have annoying windows pop up in my face. Call me old-fashioned.

BTW, thanks for your assistance.

Jim
