Exclamation explorer.exe not working on startup

recently, i have been unable to load vista correctly, and, on startup, all that appears is a black screen and my "documents" folder.

the file "explorer.exe" appears to be the issue, and i can successfully load this by simply double-clicking it in the "C:\Windows" directory

i am annoyed with having to do this every time i start my computer, and have tried anti-virus 7 anti-spyware programs (which, embarrassingly, came up with a number of infections between them), but it seems that it is not a virus or an infection

although, it may be the after-effect of a virus that my A/V program didn't pick up

The Anti-Virus program used was Avast 4.7 Professional
The Anti-Spyware program used was Spybot S&D 1.4
Both are fully updated

can anyone help me?
