Default Drop down arrow history in internet explorer 8

I have a laptop with windows vista and just installed internet explorer 8. The drop down arrow that displays the history will not drop down and show any history. I'm talking about the arrow next to the refresh and stop button. I have a desktop with windows xp and I do not have this problem. Is there something in the settings that I need to change?

If you open the Favorites (sic) panel down the left of the screen, there is a History tab next to the feeds one. That's where you will find a list of visited sites.

I had this problem in my IE8 and found a solution on another forum.

It was caused by having autocomplete for the address bar turned off.

(in Options, Content tab, AutoComplete Settings dialog)

Turning this option back on got the arrow working - although microsoft had blamed a corrupt profile ( as it only occurred on one profile on the PC ) and wanted me to set up a new profile and transfer across all the files, having already tried a remove and reinstall at their suggestion.
