Default Extending Disk Volume

In Vista Disk Management I see Disk 1 has 111.79 GB
-- Volume D: is 43.94 GB NTFS
-- this is followed by 67.85 GB "free space" (as contrasted with "unallocated" that shows up under Disk 0).

When I enter the Extend Volume Wizard and select an amount of space = 10 GB, then NEXT, then FINISH, I am informed that the disk will be converted to a dynamic disk.

Is this conversion necessary to extend a volume? Is there a reason to be wary of this?

Thanks.
